I get the feeling that she did come back but his dad didn't approve and so his dad lied to him about her coming back. And in Pete's heart he knows she's still alive out there somewhere but he misinterperts it.

I know! I was reading that and I was all like affraid WHOA! I can't believe that just happened! All of us kept saying we'd hope it would happen, but... I never thought it actually would.
